German manufacturer SPL unviled its second-gen MTC Monitor & Talkback Controller. The SPL MTC MK2 is a substantial update to the original unit. It brings SPL’s Phonitor Matrix headphone mixing circuitry alongside many core functionality touch-ups. The MTC MK2 will be ‘available soon’, priced EUR 1309.92 in Europe.
SPL MTC MK2 Monitor & Talkback Controller The MTC MK2 is a highly advanced solution for levering elaborate monitoring setups. Alongside source and speaker selection, multiple monitoring modes, and integrated premium talkback system, the unit offers discrete headphone amplifiers with SPL’s Phonitor Matrix circuitry, and an additional input for a dedicated artist mix. Out of the box, the MTC MK2 provides three pairs of outputs for stereo speakers and a mono output for a subwoofer. The monitor stereo pairs are selected from individual switches. The SUB switch can turn an additional subwoofer on and off. To that, the subwoofer output sends a mono summed signal with full frequency range. This makes it possible to connect a mono monitor speaker to the SUB output for mono mix checks. Adding to the MTC MK2’s flexibility are three different monitoring modes. These are mono/stereo, phase-inverse, and channel swap. Further along, using the MONO and the phase invert switch in combination enables Mid / Side monitoring.
MTC MK2 – Rear Besides the DIM switch for a quick attenuation of the monitoring volume by 10 dB, the MTC Mk2 also offers the option of completely switching off all speaker outputs with the SP MUTE switch. The HP MUTE switch does the same for the headphones outputs. Speaking of which, the SPL Phonitor Matrix gives the MTC MK2 a major headphone mixing advantage. The proprietary circuitry corrects the false representation of the stereo sound image that’s inherent to headphone listening. The two main parameters are Crossfeed (adjust L/R crosstalk) and Angle (adjust the opening angle of the stereo image).
