It looks like Gibson is preparing to sell NFTs of its most famous guitar models, which means you could purchase your own digital, one-time licenses based on blockchains. ADVERTISEMENT Gibson NFTs An NFT, or Non-Fungible Token, is a kind of one-time certificate that requires digital ownership, e.g. a file that can be uniquely assigned to a person, and uses blockchain technology to show up and prove who owns it and when it was purchased, released, etc. Apparently on January 14, Gibson filed for trademark registrations for the “uniquely shaped body portion” for six of its famous models, including the Les Paul, Flying V, SG, Thunderbird, Explorer and what looks like either an ES-330 or the ES-335. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office intends to “cover the categories of downloadable multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio, and video relating to music and entertainment authenticated by non-fungible tokens.” Blockchain Blockchain technology is used with things like Bitcoin and Ethereum. So in theory, everyone can see the transaction. And like many cryptocurrencies in recent years, some NFTs are rising in value quickly. Normally, you buy an NFT of exclusive art, which can be accompanied by other elements to make it more attractive. For example, Steve Vai has recently announced an NFT of The Hydra, his new multi-neck guitar, which includes exclusive bonus content.
